Spa Senior Ladies booked their place in the semi-final of the Bon Secours County Championship Junior Premier with a 1-12 to 1-5 victory over Glenflesk at Spa on Sunday.
The opening half was a scrappy and stop-start affair, with neither side able to find much rhythm. Spa gradually edged ahead through a number of frees from Saoirse Kelly, who was in good scoring form, before Glenflesk opened their account through Anna Lenihan.
Spa then produced the game's first goal when Mairead Finnegan showed great composure to round a number of defenders before calmly finishing to the net. Kelly added another free before Mairead Bennett pointed from play to leave Spa 1-5 to 0-1 ahead at the interval.
Glenflesk came out strongly after the break and enjoyed their best spell of the game, scoring three unanswered points and putting Spa under pressure. They also missed a penalty during this period, while Spa goalkeeper Alma Cronin made an important interception as Glenflesk threatened to create a goal chance.
Having weathered that spell, Spa began to regain some control as the game opened up. Mairead Finnegan and Saoirse Kelly added points before Ciara O’Sullivan hit three in succession, with the midfielder having another strong game.
Glenflesk goalkeeper Beth Healy also made two excellent close-range saves to deny Mags Cronin as Spa looked to extend their advantage.
Glenflesk continued to battle and were rewarded late on when Muireann Healy found the net, reducing the deficit. However, Spa responded immediately with Mairead Bennett adding her second point of the game to round off the scoring.
The result sees Spa through to the county semi-final after a game in which they had to deal with some difficult spells, particularly early in the second half. The Spa defence was strong throughout, while there were valuable contributions across the team.
Spa will now travel to Fossa next weekend for an eagerly awaited county championship semi-final.
