The Spa Junior Men's team got their Cahill Cup campaign underway away to Listowel Emmets in Frank Sheehy Park in Listowel on Sunday 13th September, the conditions were pretty ideal for a game of football with a slight breeze going across the pitch.

Listowel got off to the better start finding the back of the net in the 3rd minute of play from their number 13. Our Spa lads took awhile to settle in but Niall McCarthy opened their scoring with a brilliantly worked point in the 5th minute. After a period of where both teams had shots drop short and kicked few wides Spa again were on the scoresheet this time thanks to Michael Horgan who kicked Spa’s second point of the game in the 10th minute.

In the 13th Minute again, Michael Horgan was on the scoresheet with his second of the day and Spa’s third this came after two wides were kicked in a row by Spa. Then in the 14th minute Mikey Moynihan stepped up and scored a fantastic 2 pointer to put Spa in the lead on a scoreline of Spa 05 to Listowel 1-0. Listowel would respond with a point of their own in the 18th minute again from their number 13. Then from the resulting Spa kicked out that was won by Oran O’ Neill it set up another attack for Spa this time Niall McCarthy would rattle the back of the Listowel net leaving the score now at Spa 1-5 to Listowel 1-1 in the 19th minute.

Then in the 21st minute a Spa kick out that was won by Diarmuid Cahill launched the next Spa attack that resulted in Spa being awarded a penalty which was fantastically dispatched by Mikey Moynihan. There would be no score until the 31st minute where JJ O’ Donoghue toe poked the ball to the back of the net this would be the last score of the half meaning Spa were in full control at the break with the score reading Spa 3-5 Listowel 1-4

Half Time Spa 3-5 Listowel Emmets 1-4

Spa started the 2nd half like they played in the first half and after winning the throw in they went straight into the attacked where they scored their 4th goal of the day this time from the boot of Oran O’ Neill. Then in the 36th minute Spa extended their lead off the boot of Oran O’ Neill who pointed after a brilliant move. Then in the 37th minute Listowel gave themselves a small slimmer of hope as they rattled the back off the net again off the boot of their number 13. Then in the 38th minute a 2 pointer from Listowel Emmets number 11 had the score reading Spa 4-6 to Listowel 2-7. In the 42nd minute another 2 pointer off the boot of Listowel’s number 11 meant there was now only 3 points in the difference.

However, in the 42nd minute up stepped Niall McCarthy to slot over a 2 pointer. Then in the 43rd minute Spa gave themselves a bit of breathing space after Michael Horgan slotted home Spa’s 5th goal of the game. The next score would not come until the 49th minute and it was another point for Spa and again it was Oran O’ Neill who slotted it over. Spa started to take back control of the game and Michael Horgan kicked over another point after a beautifully worked move this would have the score now look like Spa 5-10 Listowel 2-9. Niall McCarthy added an extra point in the 51st minute.

In the 53rd minute after a scramble in the Listowel box which saw shots from JJ O’ Donoghue and Michael Horgan blocked and saved the ball eventually went of for a 45 which kicked with perfection by Niall McCarthy and went straight over the bar. Listowel to their credit never gave up going forward and their number 7 kicked over another point for them in the 54th minute, from the resulting kickout that was by Listowel they launched another attack which saw them kick over another point however, this would be their last score of the game as it left the score looking like Spa 5-12 Listowel 2-11 going into the last 5 minutes of normal time.

Spa went down the other end of the field after winning their own kick out and once again it was Mikey Moynihan on the scoresheet as he kicked over the next score of the game. In the 59th minute Michael Horgan would again rattle the back of the Listowel net, which would be the last score of the game leaving the full-time score Spa 6-13 Listowel 2-11.

Spa juniors will be out again next weekend in the Cahill Cup this time at home to Currow and this result will give the boys great confidence going into this game.
