31 Card Champions of Kerry

The great footballing duo of Johnny "Batt" Cronin and Andy Regan turned in many memorable performances for Spa GAA club, in days long past. Last Friday night in Torc Hotel, they turned in yet another fine-performance, when as playing partners they teamed up to win the 31 Championship of Kerry. Winning the coveted Johnny Kelly Memorial Trophy. The general consensus  among the card playing fraternity is that this was a victory richly deserved. Both have over many years, made a noble contribution to both the GAA club and this annual event, which dates back to 1972. They have  certainly  benefitted  from playing in the premier grade of local card playing in 2017 and the coaching received there-in. In addition to the Johnny Kelly Memorial Shield the winners received  Cut Glass prizes and €700 each. The runners up Niall Lynch, Michael O'Sullivan (Kilgarvan), Kathleen Ryan, Willie Cahill, William Herlihy and  Paddy O'Keeffe all received generous cash prizes.
A special words of thanks to all who supported this yearly contest from various parts of the county. The sponsors and the many business establishments who made their premises available for the various sessions. Especially the Torc Hotel  where the final was played, last but not least, the organisers, Dave Herlihy, Paddy B. Lynch, Paddy O'Keeffe and Johnny Cronin, who ensured the success of the event.
