Lee Strand U14 County Football League Div 6 Final
Spa 5-22
Kenmare Shamrocks 0-13
Our u14s produced a wonderful performance in their county league final against a spirited Kenmare side. Conditions weren't ideal for good football on a blustery evening in Spa, but our boys coped well to put their best foot forward.
A strong start was key to controlling this contest, an early brace of goals from Torin Lyne and Noah Murphy in the 4th and 6th minutes settled any nerves. Pressure placed on the Kenmare kickouts continued to produce good scoring opportunities for Spa, with Maks Wesolowski crucial to the midfield dominance, and points coming from Eric Corcoran and Jack Glesson stretched out our advantage before Eric finished a good team move for our third goal of the evening. Kenmare posed a threat with some strong runners, and 2 good scores halfway through the first period kept them in touch before Aidan Hickey managed to break through the Kenmare defence for our fourth goal with a nice finish to the left corner of the net. Nathan Jordon followed with a well taken score on his left leg. Spa were on top in most areas now and a great move from back to front, started and finished by James Brosnan, saw us take a comfortable half time lead.
Kenmare to their credit never gave in, and dominated large periods of the second half, with two of the first three scores of the second period going the red and black teams way. Crucially for Spa though, goal chances were hard to come by for Kenmare, Sam O'Shea and Eoin Brosnan leading a strong defensive performance. At the other end, Eric Corcoran managed to break though once more and an emphatic finish to the roof of the net brought up our fifth goal. Eric, along with Aidan Hickey and Torin Lyne managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over when chances presented. Kenmare, who spent large spells of the 2nd half in control, were beginning to find their shooting boots, and some nice teams scores were just rewards for the effort they put in. Jack Kissane at the other end got a good score before it was left to Torin Lyne to kick the final score of a good team performance after an excellent interception.
Hard luck to Kenmare who showed plenty of ability throughout the match, and no doubt they will be back competing for silverware in the not too distant future.
Our Spa boys now look forward to the East Kerry League Div 1 campaign which get underway later this week away to Scartaglin Sunday morning before we welcome Legion next Tuesday night. Crokes and Kilcummin complete the group. Our u14 development team face Rathmore, Legion, Crokes, Firies and Kilcummin in East Kerry League Div 4. They open against Rathmore this Friday evening. Plenty football still to be played for this group this year.
Thanks to referee Peter Curtin for reffing a very sporting contest.
