Our u14s just came up short in a highly competitive game of football played in Spa on Tuesday evening in the East Kerry Final.
The visitors started the brighter, with Alex Finn netting after 3 mins with a looping shot. He followed with three points, two from frees, and a further score by Josh Nelligan had Firies 1-4 to 0-0 up after 15 mins. Amazingly after Spa failed to score in the first quarter, Firies failed to register in the second quarter as the home side took over. We needed 17 mins to open the account through Eric Corcoran, and it was Eric who goaled after 20 mins following a rebound from the crossbar, with a lovely finish from an acute angle. Spa were struggling however to make the dominance pay on the scoreboard with some wides, but points from Eric and James Brosnan from a free ensured the minimum between the sides at the break, Spa 1-3 Firies 1-4. .
Spa's momentum continued with the dream start to the second period, when a high dropping shot by Eric managed to get bundled over the line by Aidan Hickey to put us in front for the first time. Alex Finn replied with a pair of scores, one from a free to level the contest, 2-3 to 1-6. Both sides were finding scores hard to come by, with defenses well on top at both ends of the pitch. It was the away side however who carved out the crucial goal at the midway point of the second period to take the lead. Firies began to turn the screw from there and followed with six points in a row from Alex Finn, three frees amongst them. Spa however stuck to the task and a brilliant Eric Corcoran finish to the bottom corner breathed new life into the home side late on. James Brosnan, Aidan Hickey and Jack Glesson added points down the stretch to bring it back to three points, but unfortunately time ran out on our side, Spa 3-6 Firies 2-12.
Well done to Firies who were deserving winners on the night in a tough battle. Credit to our Spa lads however, who battled right to the end.
Next up is our u14 development team who host Rathmore in the EK Div 4B Final at home in Spa on Friday evening at 6.30.
Our u14A side now look forward to the East Kerry Championship in a few weeks time. Still plenty football ahead for this group.
