Victory for our ladies in Round 1 of the Donal Curtin County League Division 2
Spa 6-15 Finuge/St. Senans 2-02
The Spa senior ladies hosted Finuge/St. Senans in Round 1 of the Donal Curtin County League Division 2 in wet conditions on home soil.
Finuge/St. Senans opened the scoring early with a point from Miriam O’Keeffe, but Spa responded immediately and took control from there. A well-worked move between Saoirse Kelly and Liadh Tobin led to the opening goal, with Liadh adding further scores to give Spa a strong start.
Spa were on top throughout the first half, with great work rate all over the pitch. The defence worked hard to win turnovers and turn them into scores, while a brilliant team move involving Meghann Cronin, Liadh Tobin and Saoirse Kelly resulted in another goal. Points from Ciara O’Sullivan, Mags Cronin and Saoirse Kelly helped Spa build a strong lead going in at half time.
Spa finished the half strongly with an excellent goal from Mairead Bennett. Finuge/St. Senans remained competitive throughout the half, scoring two goals and showing great resilience, with their goalkeeper also making an excellent save with a shot from Mairead Bennett.
Spa carried this momentum into the second half. Sarah Fleming opened the scoring with a point, before Liadh Tobin got another goal to complete her hat-trick. Saoirse Kelly added points from frees, while substitute Ava Brosnan made an instant impact, scoring a superb goal within 30 seconds of coming on in her debut senior game, and followed it up with two further points.
The Spa defence was outstanding in the second half, holding Finuge/St. Senans scoreless with strong performances across the pitch.
Finuge/St. Senans showed great determination throughout, working hard from start to finish and never dropping their intensity.
Overall, it was a brilliant team performance showing great work rate, teamwork and composure in difficult conditions. Well done also to debutants Lily O’Shea, Alanna Collins and Ava Brosnan (pictured below) on their first appearances for the senior ladies.
