Spa secured their first win of the season with a hard-earned two-point victory over Beaufort, in a game that also saw the welcome return of Joey McCarthy and Dara Moynihan to league action.
Spa were in control for much of the first half, setting the tone early with points from Shane Cronin, Luke O’Neill and Mike Foley inside the opening minutes. Cian Murphy added a free and a point from play, while Joey McCarthy also chipped in, as Spa kept the scoreboard ticking. Beaufort stayed in touch through Ronan Murphy and a two-pointer from Fergal Hallissey, but Spa’s consistency in attack saw them deservedly lead 0-10 to 0-5 at the break.
Beaufort produced a strong spell after half-time, with Hallissey and Darragh O’Connor narrowing the gap. Spa responded through Gary Vaughan, who struck twice in quick succession, including a fine solo effort, to keep them in front. However, momentum then swung as Jack Sweeney struck for a well-taken goal to the roof of the net, and further points from Kevin Coffee and Hallissey saw Beaufort level and then edge in front for the first time.
The game turned decisively moments later as Cian Murphy stepped up with two superb two-pointers in quick succession, swinging momentum firmly back in Spa’s favour and restoring their lead.
Beaufort continued to battle through scores from O’Connor and Coffee, but Joey McCarthy (free) and Evan Cronin—who added two important points to keep Spa ahead—helped maintain the advantage. Dara Moynihan’s return from injury was also warmly received by the home support.
A nervy finish followed as Beaufort pushed for an equaliser, but Spa held firm to see out a deserved 0-19 to 1-14 victory after leading for the majority of the contest.
