Spa Senior Men have continued their strong run in the County League, making it three wins on the bounce after an opening run of three defeats. Following last week’s impressive win away to Dr Crokes, they backed it up with another excellent result against Rathmore, running out 3-11 to 0-13 winners. A powerful first-half display proved decisive, with Spa striking three goals in a devastating five-minute spell to take control of the contest and build a lead that ultimately defined the game.
Spa set the tone early with points from David Spillane and Cian Murphy, settling into the contest well despite Rathmore staying in touch through a series of early scores. As the half progressed, Spa began to find their rhythm, with Murphy and Evan Cronin adding further points before the game turned emphatically in Spa’s favour. Goals from Michael Horgan, David Spillane and Evan Cronin inside a blistering spell blew the game open, with additional points from Dara Moynihan and Cronin helping Spa to a commanding 3-8 to 0-5 half-time lead. It was a superb first-half performance, with Spa clinical in attack and well in control across the pitch.
The second half was a more fragmented affair. While Spa added early points through David Spillane, Rathmore responded with a series of scores, including two two-pointers, as they attempted to close the gap. Momentum was further tested when Spa were reduced to 13 men following red cards to Michael Horgan and Darragh Brosnan. Despite this, Spa showed great resilience and composure. A key moment came when Rathmore were awarded a penalty, but substitute goalkeeper Jack O’Sullivan—introduced after Shay O’Meara’s injury—produced an outstanding save to deny them and maintain a healthy cushion. Had that chance been converted, the game may have taken on a different complexion, but Spa remained in control, digging in impressively before a late point from Evan Cronin capped off a deserved win.
Overall, it was an excellent first-half display that laid the foundation, and while the second half was more laboured, Spa’s character and defensive resolve ensured there was no real threat to their lead as they saw the game out confidently.
