Last Tuesday, the Spa under-14 team travelled to Laune Rangers to take on Keel in the Division 6 County League Final.
A strong crossfield wind favoured Spa in the opening half. After both sides exchanged early points, Spa began to dominate possession and settled into the game well.
Midway through the first half, Spa had built up a 0-5 to 0-1 lead thanks to scores from Daniel Cremin, James Brosnan (2), Josh Buckley and Brayane Ouattara. Keel responded strongly during the second quarter and proved dangerous in attack, scoring 1-2 to get themselves back into contention. However, with the aid of the wind, Spa finished the half strongly. Further points from Josh Buckley and James Brosnan, who added another three points, helped Spa extend their advantage and leave the halftime score at Spa 0-9, Keel 1-3.
Spa opened the second half with an early point to move four points clear. However, Keel dominated the next spell and hit 1-1 to draw level. With the wind now at their backs, Keel looked poised to take control of the contest.
To their credit, Spa dug deep and produced some of their best football of the season. The defence began to get on top, winning vital 50/50 battles and turning over possession all over the field. Spa’s backs were outstanding and held Keel to just three further points for the remainder of the game.
At the other end, Spa pushed ahead with further scores from Josh Buckley and James Brosnan, who added two points, before Daniel Cremin struck for Spa’s only goal of the game.
The work rate all over the pitch was immense, with Spa winning possession repeatedly and driving forward at every opportunity. Further points from Noah Murphy, Jack Kissane and three more from the boot of James Brosnan sealed an excellent victory.
Spa ran out deserving winners on a final scoreline of Spa 1-17, Keel 2-7.
After the game, Jimmy Darcy from the County Board presented the trophy to Spa captain James Brosnan. Spa would also like to thank Keel for a very sporting game and referee Mike Morrissey for officiating the final.
