Spa suffered defeat in the opening round of the U16 County League in difficult conditions away to Kenmare on Thursday evening.
Spa dominated possession for long periods of the first half but struggled to convert that advantage into scores. Kenmare proved more clinical and opened up a lead, but a late Spa rally, sparked by a superb two-point effort from Brendan McHugh, helped close the gap. Despite that surge, Kenmare led at the interval on a scoreline of 2-5 to 0-6.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Spa enjoying plenty of possession but finding scores difficult to come by due to some wayward shooting. To their credit, the visitors never gave up and mounted a strong finish. Goals from Eric Corcoran and Mark Corkery brought Spa right back into contention, while two-point scores from Sam O'Shea and Adam Moynihan further reduced the deficit.
Moynihan once again led by example throughout with a tireless display, while Spa can also take encouragement from the determination shown by the entire team in battling to the final whistle.
Next up for Spa is a home fixture against Glenflesk next Thursday at 7.00pm.
