Spa 1-17 Dingle 1-11

Spa produced a memorable performance on Saturday evening as they defeated reigning All-Ireland champions Dingle by 1-17 to 1-11 in Round 1 of the Garvey’s SuperValu Senior Football Championship.

From the opening whistle, Spa showed their intent and were quickest out of the blocks, with two early points from captain Evan Cronin inside the opening three minutes. The sides exchanged scores during an even opening quarter before Dingle struck for the game’s first goal in the 19th minute, Cathal Bambury palming the ball to the net to give the West Kerry side a two-point advantage.

Spa responded impressively, however, finishing the half with six unanswered points. Among them were excellent two-pointers from Cian Murphy and Dara Moynihan, as Spa showed patience in possession and took their opportunities well. They went into the interval four points ahead.

Dingle came out strongly after the restart and registered the first three scores of the second half to reduce the deficit to just a point. Spa remained composed, though, and the sides traded scores over the next ten minutes.

The pivotal moment arrived in the 51st minute when Spa found the net. Liam Kearney picked out Liam Spillane with an excellent pass, and Spillane showed great composure to round his defender before finding Cian Murphy with a superb through ball. Murphy made no mistake, finishing through the legs of the Dingle goalkeeper to extend Spa’s lead to five points.

Dingle responded with a point shortly afterwards, but Spa remained disciplined during the closing stages. The defence dealt with everything Dingle threw at them, while Spa continued to threaten on the counter. Dara Moynihan added two further points in the final seven minutes to help see Spa over the line and secure a six-point victory.

It was an outstanding collective effort from the Spa players, with every member of the panel making an important contribution.

Shay O’Meara dealt confidently with the pressure when called upon, particularly during Dingle’s late push. In front of him, Eoin Fitz, Darragh Brosnan and Dan O’Donoghue were strong throughout, making important tackles and interceptions, with Shane Cronin and Oran O’Neill also contributing to a disciplined defensive display.

Liam Kearney, Mike Foley and Dara Moynihan covered huge ground throughout the evening, breaking up Dingle attacks and competing strongly around the middle, alongside Joey McCarthy and Michael Horgan who often had to drop deep and help break up play.

Niall McCarthy and David Spillane worked tirelessly in the forward line, while Evan Cronin and Cian Murphy were clinical with their scoring, contributing 11 points between them. The Spa substitutes also made a valuable impact when introduced, with Liam Spillane particularly influential, contributing a point and playing a key role in the build-up to Murphy’s goal.

The result sees Spa advance to the quarter-finals of the Senior Football Championship, with the quarter-final draw due to take place on Sunday afternoon.
