Club Notes (September 12th 2022)

MINOR B CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SPA 3-16 MOYVANE 0-9
Spa welcomed Moyvane on Saturday afternoon in this year's Minor B Club Championship semi-final and got off to a good start with 1-2 on the board within minutes, points from Timothy Moynihan and Oran Daly, and Luke O'Neill with the first Spa goal. Moyvane replied with 3 quick points before Timothy added two more for Spa. At the end of the first quarter, we were 1-4 to 0-3 in front. Oran Daly, Luke Doolan and Timothy Moynihan kicked three more before the break and at half time we were leading by 1-7 to 0-5.

Luke O'Neill pointed shortly after the restart before Oran O'Neill netted the second Spa goal. Timothy Moynihan, Oran O'Neill (2) and Shane O'Sullivan extended that lead to 2-12 to 0-5 as the final quarter began. Both sides had a player sent to the sin bin for a 10-minute spell in this half but with points from Luke Doolan (2), Timothy Moynihan and Oran O'Neill, and a late goal from Luke O'Neill, the game ended Spa 3-16 to Moyvane 0-9. Spa play Listowel Emmets in the Minor B Club Championship Final next weekend. Fixture details to be confirmed. Wishing all our injured players a speedy recovery.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP RD1 SPA 1-6 DINGLE 4-10
They say goals win games and that was certainly the case in Killorglin on Sunday afternoon as Spa and Dingle met in Rd1 of this year's County Championship. Having already met last month in Rd1 of the Club Championship, the sides knew what battle lay ahead.

Paul Geaney tapped over a free in the early minutes and Evan Cronin replied with a lovely long range shot to make it 0-1 apiece after five minutes. Both teams had some good scoring opportunities in the opening quarter but frustratingly, every shot they took landed left or right of the posts. It was on the quarter hour mark before Mike Foley kicked the next point and the Spa goal came two minutes later, a free for David Spillane and as the Dingle crew protested, David took the free quickly and lobbed the keeper to give Spa a 1-2 to 0-1 lead.

Dingle were quick to respond however, Tom O’Sullivan (2f) and Dylan Geaney (2) levelling the game before Shane Cronin punched over the bar to give Spa the lead for the final time in the game. Geaney hit another point before he was brought down in the square on his next attack, Mikey Geaney converting from the penalty spot right before the half time whistle. At the break, Dingle had gone in front on a score of Spa 1-3 to Dingle 1-6.

Barra Ó Súilleabháin scored right from the restart before Paul Geaney’s free tipped the inside of the post to extend that lead. Mike Foley and Mikey Geaney swapped scores and momentum swung in Spa’s direction for a short while as Evan Cronin and Gary Vaughan pointed to reduce the gap to just three - Spa now trailing 1-6 to 1-9 after forty minutes. Dingle swiftly replied however as Paul Geaney goaled in the 43rd minute. He then he set up the third goal in the 51st minute, a sideline ball dropped in towards the goalmouth and Mikey Geaney jumping to knock it into the back of the Spa net. Goal number four came from Niall Geaney in the 62nd minute and a final point from Dylan Geaney closed out the scoring at Spa 1-6 to Dingle 4-10.

Next weekend Spa play East Kerry in Rd2 followed by Kerins O’Rahillys the weekend after - all fixture details to be confirmed. Wishing our injured players a speedy recovery.

MCELLIGOTT CUP SHIELD SEMI-FINAL

U13 BOYS EAST KERRY DIVISION 2
Our U13’s made the short trip to Dr. Crokes last week for the final round of the East Kerry league and they served up a cracker. The night started on a somber note and both sets of players and management teams impeccably observed a minute’s silence for the late Patsy Cremin which started and finished on referee Eddie Walsh’s whistle.

Spa started the game strong hitting 1-1 in the opening 5 mins, to their credit Crokes responded with 4 unanswered points of their own. It was blow for blow for the remainder of the game finishing the first half 1-7 to 1-5 to spa… the third quarter belonged to spa and kicked on to open a 7 point lead with 11 remaining on the clock…. Crokes with a never say die attitude did not lie down and rattled off 1-4 in this period and the sides were all square going into injury time, however it was the young blues that took the spoils by the slenderest of margins with a superb score at the death. Credit to both sets of players for a cracking game.

This spells the end of the year for the U13’s, a year that was filled with excellent football and excitement for the years to come. The coaches, Sean, Eoin, Tom, John, Conor and Denis throughly enjoyed the year and future looks bright for this group. Thanks to Crokes for a very sporting game and to all the parents and family for supporting the group throughout the year.
