U11 East Kerry League Spa 3-11 Glenflesk 4-9

This was another exciting encounter in the U11 category between Spa and Glenflesk. All the ingredients were there for a very close game and all to play for the win, down to the last kick. Spa started very strong going 2-03 to 0-2 points up after ten minutes. Both teams exchanged a few more scores bringing it to Spa 2-06 to Glenflesk 1-04 at half time. The second half Glenflesk started the strongest bringing the game to level. Both teams took a 1 point lead on many occasions but in the end Glenflesk came away with a 1 point win.Well done to all the players in both teams in providing a great game of football. We are home again next Wednesday night at 7pm to Gneeveguilla.

Our second team travelled to Fossa on the same night and played out another thrilling game, both teams showed great skill and determination, however, Fossa came out winners in the end. Well done to everyone involved.

Henry Deane Cup

Spa Senior men played their Bantry Blues counterparts in the annual Henry Deane Cup on Wednesday, the 4th of September. The game was played in Spa. In a very close and competitive match the sides were level at half-time. The second half saw the forwards of Spa gain control and driven on from the back Spa took a five point lead. Bantry responded well but Spa continued to drive forward and emerged victorious. Michael O Donoghue, Spa captain, lifted the Cup which was presented by the president of Bantry Blues: Fr. Joe McCarthy.

Henry Deane, who sadly passed away in 2010, helped forge strong links between both clubs, especially at underage level. The links continue as was seen a year ago when Bantry Ladies played Spa Ladies for the Cup. Furthermore, the links were very evident when Spa U11’s were invited to Bantry during the summer for a blitz.

Henry, who became close friends with Brian Gleeson, even trekked the country supporting Spa whenever he could. He was in attendance when Spa claimed a Munster Intermediate title in Mallow ten years ago. A GAA fanatic, Henry helped form a friendship between two Clubs on opposite sides of the border and his strong message of supporting Club football lives on each year as we remember him in our games.
