Our 2019 season got off to a fantastic start with our U10 boys winning all three of their games at the U10 Go Games Easter Blitz in the John Mitchels grounds. Our boys put on a fine display of skills and kicking ability and raced into an early lead in all games. The season is looking good for these boys.
Ian O'Connell
Congratulations to Ian O'Connell who was one of the award recipients at the inaugural Garda National Youth Awards in Laois last Saturday. Ian has been recognised nationally for "showing strength in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds", and his positive attitude and encouragement to others since his life-changing accident in August 2017.
U16s
On Easter Monday, Spa u-16s played their third and final game away to Gneevguilla. Both teams started with 15 players on this occasion, which was a positive straight away. We played against a tough breeze in the first half but that didn’t stop us from playing some good football. We scored an early goal after great play from the young duo of Timothy Moynihan and Oran O Neill. We defended superbly throughout the half, although working the ball out of the defence let us down at times. After a superb individual goal by Roiri O Connor, and points from Eoghan Mulvaney and Donagh Fahy had us trailing by only 2 at half time. Spa 2-3 , Gneevguilla 2-5
Spa played with the wind in the second half, but Gneevguilla started the stronger. Their more physical presence around the middle of the field began to sway the game in their favour with some stunning catches of the ball being displayed by their numbers 8 and 9. We continued to cause their defence trouble whenever the ball was kicked up, with the impressive Roiri O Connor finishing with a hat trick. Gneevguilla dominated possession however and one they began to get the upper hand, the game slipped away from Spa’s grasp. The boys tried hard until the end which was very encouraging.
With a good blend of older and younger players, we are excited to work with this group in preparation for the county league.

Played in a sunny Spa on Saturday evening, Spa needed to rack up a high score and wait on other results to keep their championship hopes alive - and they certainly did that, kicking 4-5 in a massive second half comeback.
Spa were consistently attacking right from the throw in, and after ten minutes were leading by 0-7 to 0-4, with Evan Cronin (4), Niall O'Mahony, Niall McCarthy and David Spillane on target for Spa and Daire Cleary, Kieran Doona (2) and John Tyther scoring for the visitors. While Spa closed in on goal a number of times in the opening quarter, Laune Rangers best goal opportunity came from Shane McSweeney who had a great run forward but his effort went just inches wide.
Laune Rangers defence were clearing all shots on goal and with additional points from Kieran Doona, Fiachra Clifford and Daire Cleary (2) they kept the pressure on Spa, the home side replying with a Dan O'Donoghue point to put just a point between the sides at 0-8 to 0-7 as half time approached. Late scores from Niall O'Mahony, Niall McCarthy and an outstanding Evan Cronin point had Spa leading at the break - Spa 0-11 Laune Rangers 0-7.
Evan Cronin and Daragh O'Connor exchanged points at the start of the second half, and with the first goal chance of the second half for Spa well blocked, at the other end Peter Crowley broke through the Spa defence and goaled for Laune Rangers just three minutes in. Points by Daragh O'Connor and Shane Daly followed to edge Laune Rangers in front at 1-10 to 0-12. Spa however, picked up the pace and after a great '45 from Niall McCarthy to level the game, a perfect pass in by Liam Kearney was finished to the net by Evan Cronin in the 40th minute. Fiachra Clifford replied with a point for Laune Rangers before Spa were full on attacking again, with points by Niall O'Mahony and Evan Cronin followed by a second Spa goal in the 47th minute by David Spillane.
A John Tyther point followed, but Spa responded brilliantly again, Evan Cronin with another goal and Cormac Cronin with a point to make it 3-16 to 1-12 with just minutes remaining. John Tyther added a point for Rangers before Niall McCarthy rattled the net for a fourth Spa goal.
Laune Rangers came back down the field however, and after a brilliant save by James Devane, points from Peter Crowley, Fiachra Clifford and Daire Cleary finished the game at 4-16 to 1-16.

Spa girls were out in force on Sunday 14th April at Fitzgerald Stadium to support Tim O'Connor, Donal O'Doherty and the Kerry Senior Ladies Team as they played Cavan in the last round of the Lidl NFL Division 2 league.
This was a training exercise for our girls, they were all given a player to watch, similar to positions they would play in the field. It was a very exciting game with Kerry leading 3-3 to 1-6 at half time. It was lovely to see the Fossa and Legion u10 girls teams playing at half time.
Unfortunately, it was not to be Kerry’s day, however the spa girls cheered them on til the very last minute.
At the end of the game, each Spa girl spoke of their personal highlights seen during the game. They were so impressed with the teamwork, the physical fitness of the girls and their wonderful display of skill. They were devastated for the Kerry girls - however, even with the devastation of their loss, it did not deter the mentors and players from welcoming the Spa girls.
Tim O'Connor opened up the gates of the stadium, invited all the girls on to the pitch, were they got to experience the vast size of the stadium. They were then brought down through the tunnel and into the corridors, where all the great footballers are honoured and displayed on the walls. And if that wasn’t enough of an experience they were individually greeted by Donal and got to meet some of their idols such as 3 times All Star winner Sarah Houlihan.
The u14 /u12 girls had an experience that they will remember for a long time. And hopefully this experience will inspire them to work hard and maybe Spa club will have some future Kerry Ladies Stars.
Wishing Donal, Tim and the Kerry Senior Ladies all the best in the semi-finals next weekend where Kerry will play Armagh.
Spa and Glenbeigh/Glencar met in Beaufort in Rd2 of the Intermediate Championship, and with the wind and rain making conditions less than ideal, Spa snatched victory right at the very end with a late goal. For the match report click here

U14 Girls
Our second u14 girls game of the season against St Pats Blennerville away. We travelled to Blennerville for a 10-a-side game, played under awful conditions of high winds and rain. Spa struggled to grips with the horrible conditions. They never gave up and represented the club well. Every girl gave it their all, with particular praise to Isabel Waters and Aoife O'Donoghue for their goals. And player of the match goes to captain Aoife O'Donoghue. The U14 girls were in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday supporting the Kerry Ladies v Cavan and met some of the Kerry players after the game.
U-12 Boys
Co League Div 7 Rd 2: Spa 5-14 to 2-07 Kerins O Rahillys
It was a dry spring evening with a cold stiff breeze blowing down from the Tiernaboul end of the field in the direction of the town centre. Rahilly’s won the toss and opted to play with the wind in the first half and duly opened the scoring with a fine point from play aided by the breeze. Against the wind it took our lads a few minutes to adjust but it wasn’t long before our boys got into a nice rhythm with some fabulous scores & link up play coming from Joey, Fionn, JJ, Luke, Alex, Cormac & Shane. Maurice joy in the half back line wasn’t found wanting in the scoring action either with some lovely scores from play to finish the half 4-05 to 0-04 in favour of the home team. Tralee side responded strongly in the second half with two early goals, and only for some resolute defending by Adam, Jake & our captain Daragh Brosnan coupled with two fine saves by Caoilann Mitchell in goal the margins might have been tighter. The second half also saw the introduction of Jasiek & Thomas in the forward line with both quick to get in on the scoring action. At the same time Daithi O Donoghue was introduced into the half back line to assist in defence and these boys helped immensely in the team finishing the winners on the night.

Spa and Glenbeigh/Glencar met in Beaufort in Rd2 of the Intermediate Championship, and with the wind and rain making conditions less than ideal, Spa snatched victory right at the very end with a late late goal.
Daniel Griffin kicked the opening point before Liam Kearney sent a long high ball in towards the square. The keeper, however, had his goal well covered to deny Andrew Garnett an early opportunity. Kearney and Mike McCarthy were dominating the centre and set up Mike O'Donoghue for three further Spa points. Playing with the strong breeze, Spa closed in on goal a second time, but Ryan O'Carroll's effort was well blocked before Mike O'Donoghue kicked his fourth point.
Another long effort was sent in to Garnett, and this time the ball came off the crossbar and was cleared before Evan Cronin kicked over Spa's fifth point.
Glenbeigh/Glencar, against the wind, slowly worked the ball up the field where a free from Tommy Cahill in the 15th minute dropped short, the bounce catching the Spa defence off guard and the ball crossed the white line after a scramble in the goalmouth. Andrew Garnett kicked the next score, and at the end of the first quarter, Spa led 0-6 to 1-1.
Darran O'Sullivan and Fergal Griffin points levelled the game shortly after, but Spa quickly replied with two more from Mike O'Donoghue. Daniel Griffin added a last score for Glenbeigh/Glencar before Ryan O'Carroll (2) and an outstanding Mike McCarthy point made it 0-11 to 1-4 at the break.
Caolim Teahan and Mike O'Donoghue swapped points early in the second half and the introduction of Gavan O'Grady certainly turned the game. Evan Cronin added to the Spa lead to make it 0-13 to 1-5 before a great turnover in the middle almost finished to the net, Andrew Garnett's shot just shy of the post.
Glenbeigh/Glencar, taking full advantage of the wind, soon took control of the game and points from Darran O'Sullivan and Gavan O'Grady (2) helped pick away at the Spa lead, despite some outstanding defending by Dan O'Donoghue. O'Sullivan came close on goal at the end of the third quarter, but was unlucky when he made a run forward and his effort crossed just inches in front of goal, going harmlessly wide. Glenbeigh/Glencar were dominating the play by now, with two additional shots landing short in to David Carroll and cleared by the Spa defence.
Tommy Cahill added another for Glenbeigh/Glencar before Caolim Teahan's shot finished to the back of the net in the 54th minute to edge them ahead by two, Spa 0-13 Glenbeigh/Glencar 2-9. Gavan O'Grady and Ryan O'Carroll exchanged points as the game approached full time and then O'Grady added another for Glenbeigh, an outstanding high ball curling in the wind and right between the posts.
After two added minutes, Ryan O'Carroll was bearing down on goal but the shot went high and over the crossbar. The last kick out was won by Spa in the middle and followed with a brilliant run in by Shane Cronin. He passed it in to Evan Cronin and, despite the awkward angle, Evan's shot rattled the net in the 64th minute before the referee blew for full time. The game finished Spa 1-15 Glenbeigh/Glencar 2-11.
