Co League Rd6: Spa 4-8 Na Gaeil 3-9

Spa had a slow start to the game and, playing with the wind in the opening half, they kicked several wides, but a stronger second half performance and some great individual displays earned Spa two more Co League points.

The game began with a point each for Ciaran Spillane and Jamie Lowham before Cormac Cronin rattled the net in the 17th minute for the first Spa goal. A point from Dan O'Donoghue followed to put Spa in front 1-2 to 0-1 before Ryan O'Carroll was sent to the line on a black card. Na Gaeil quickly levelled the game with a point from Kieran O'Donovan before Dan Goggin dropped the ball in front of the Spa goalmouth where it was fumbled and crossed the white line.

A free from Mike O'Donoghue put Spa ahead temporarily, but Na Gaeil scored a second goal just three minutes after their first one, Ian McCarthy the goal scorer in the 27th minute. With a point from Jamie Lowham, and another free from Mike O'Donoghue, the home side led at the break, Spa 1-4 Na Gaeil 2-3.

Spa opened the second half well and worked the ball in to the small square where the brilliant Ciaran Spillane set up Mike O'Donoghue for another Spa point. Dara Devine quickly responded for Na Gaeil before Niall McCarthy finished Spa's second goal. Another point from Dara Devine and the sides were level at 2-5 apiece going in to the final quarter.

Shane Cronin kicked the next one for Spa to briefly take the lead, but after a great save by David Carroll at the other end, Na Gaeil went in front again after points from Jamie Lowham and Darragh Reen. Shane Cronin buried the ball in the back of the net in the 50th minute, and Niall McCarthy followed with a point, but Dara Devine scored the third goal for Na Gaeil to make it level pegging once more at 3-7 to 3-7 with less than five minutes remaining.

A minute later and Mike Foley rattled the net for a fourth goal for Spa, and shortly after Shane Cronin kicked the ball straight between the posts, but Na Gaeil continued to chase, and two late points from Dara Devine did reduce the gap before the final whistle blew, the game finishing Spa 4-8 Na Gaeil 3-9.

Another two points on the board, and next up we are home to Dr Crokes on the weekend of June 29/30.

Co League Rd5 Spa 3-10 Kilcummin 1-15

Although conditions were less than ideal, the large crowd in Spa were treated to a tense, exciting game of football with neighbours Kilcummin. With just a point separating the teams for most of the added ten minutes of injury time, Spa held out for the win and the valuable two county league points.

Mikey O'Shea and Noel Duggan kicked early points for Kilcummin before two pointed frees from Mike Stam O'Donoghue were quickly followed by the first Spa goal in the 8th minute, Dan O'Donoghue kicking a long ball in to David Spillane who finished to the net. Matt Keane replied for Kilcummin before a brilliant Dan O'Donoghue effort curled between the posts. Kieran Murphy and Mike Foley exchanged points and at the end of the first quarter, Spa led 1-4 to 0-4.

Kilcummin were dangerous in attack and a Kieran Murphy goal shot hit the side netting before Shane McSweeney buried the ball in the Spa net to level the game. Kilcummin began to dominate the play and followed on with points from Noel Duggan (3), Philip Casey and Gary O'Leary as Dan O'Donoghue pointed a final Spa score before the break. At half time we trailed 1-5 to 1-9.

Noel Duggan was on target with a pointed free early in the second half, but Spa kicked two goals in as many minutes from Ryan O'Carroll and Shane Cronin to edge the home side in front again at 3-5 to 1-10. Mike Stam O'Donoghue (3) and Cormac Cronin extended that lead, but Kilcummin swiftly responded with three points from Noel Duggan (2) and Matt Keane to put two between the sides as injury time approached.

James Devane pulled off a super save, but with several stoppages during the second half, there was ten minutes of injury time yet to come. Noel Duggan pointed for Kilcummin to reduce the gap once more to just a point. The game was very stop-start again for the final few minutes, and with constant pressure from Kilcummin, Spa struggled to get the ball forward. The final Spa score came from David Spillane deep in injury time to again increase the Spa lead to two points.

Kilcummin battled right to the final minute and a 14-yard free by Noel Duggan was sent between the posts, so again a point separated teams as the 70th minute approached. There was time for one more Kilcummin attack, but great defending by Spa turned the ball over and the final whistle blew - the game finishing Spa 3-10 Kilcummin 1-15.

Two more from Spa's Ryan Kelliher and Conor Gleeson and two more from Crokes' Roan Delaney before the break had Spa trailing 0-4 to 0-7.

Brendan Falvey and Ryan Kelliher exchanged points early in the second half before Spa had a penalty shot sent over the crossbar. Well Done to Kerry

Well done to the Kerry GAA team & management on their win over Clare last Saturday - and also to our Spa player Oran O'Neill who was playing in the Primary Schools game at half time.

U12 Boys Spa v An Ghaeltacht

U12 A: The game got off to a blistering start with a goal apiece inside the first 5 minutes. Following this, both sides traded points for much of the remainder of the half. There were some fabulous passages of play, defensive skill and attacking guile on display by both sides, but a scoring burst which included two goals just before half time gave our boys an advantage going in at the break leading 3-07 to 2-04. Having played against the breeze in the first half, An Gaeltacht started the second half strongly aided by a strong breeze blowing up from the town end of the pitch. They scored 2-06 in total in the second half, however our boys defended stoutly and were not found wanting in attack either and kicked 2-03 ourselves against the breeze to record a great win with final score of 5-10 to 4-11.

U12 B:Playing against a strong breeze in the first half, Spa did very well to go in only 2 points down at half time. In the second half Spa came out fighting and levelled things up with 10 minutes to go. However, An Gaeltacht proved toostrong in the end and the game finished 4-04 to 2-06. It was a great performance by Spa considering most of the team is made up from our U10’s.

U10

Our U10 team travelled to Dr. Crokes on Saturday morning with both clubs fielding 2 teams. They played 2 great games of football, showing great skill and determination.Well done boys.
