The 46th Annual Lily of Killarney was another huge success held in the Gleneagle Hotel last Friday night May 27th.
The Spa Ladies Committee put together an evening of great entertainment to host one of Killarney’s elite social events of the year.
Bualadh bos to the committee who have put in tremendous amount of hours organising this major fundraiser for the club. Club Chairman Michael Cronin thanked the committee of Marie O'Keeffe (Chairperson) Denise Gleeson, Evelyn Murphy, Sheila Curtin, Claire O'Mahony, Kerry Holland, Tracey O'Mahony, Sheila Cronin, Geraldine O'Neill and Grainne Fitzgibbon for another successful evening.
This would not be a success without the support of our sponsors. Once again the Killarney Credit Union continued their support and Helen Courtney Power and Karena McCarthy were on hand to present the lilies an engraved trophy on stage. Our media partner Killarney Outlook and the guidance of editor Aisling Crosbie was a tremendous help once again.
The 31 Lilies looked beautiful and represented their sponsor with grace and elegance.
On the stroke of midnight, the charismatic Ray O'Sullivan, our MC of the night, announced the winner. The judges of Dawn Ryan, Margaret Kissane and Miriam O'Sullivan deliberated all evening and finally a decision was reached to hand over the envelope and Chairperson, Marie O'Keeffe presented the winner, Shauna Goggin, with the Healy-Cronin Perpetual Trophy.
Elated, Sponsor Neily O'Connor, was delighted and congratulated Shauna on stage. 2018 Lily of Killarney, Carmel O'Leary passed over the title to Shauna with hugs and words of great encouragement. (Carmel was a brilliant ambassador for the Lily and documented her year with photos and plenty of selfies).
Liadh Tobin of Killarney Medals and Trophies presented Shauna with a beautiful cut glass trophy. She won €500, a two night break in London for the Killarney/London Reunion 2019 from Noel O'Sullivan, a luxurious hamper of hair products by Pat O'Neill Style Suite, voucher for Sheer Beauty, bouquet of flowers by White Heather, an electrical gift from Mike O'Leary of O’Leary Expert, a gift from Adams Jewellers and a voucher for Beauty Boutique.
Shauna will represent the Lily of Killarney at numerous functions throughout the year including the Killarney/London Reunion, St. Patrick's Day Parade, Christmas in Killarney and Killarney Races to name but a few.
A special mention to Jill Duggan, Killarney Toning Studio, for her generous package to all 31 contestants. Thanks to Tracy Coyne and The International Hotel for the press launch and the use of their facilities.
Additional sponsorship was generously provided by Allure Hair Salon, Muckross Park Hotel, Park Road Pharmacy, O'Carroll Engineering, McSweeney Arms Hotel, Katie Purtill Physiotherapy, Quirke’s Quarry, Kerry Tool Hire, Sheahan’s Centra Muckross Road, Keane’s Jewellers, BOD Construction, Olympic Haulage, Bricín, Killarney Stonecast, Killarney Medals and Trophies and Quinlan’s Fish Shop.

Thanks also to Liam Kealy and staff of the Gleneagle Hotel for their assistance to make this night a success. The Band Renovater was also top class.
Last but not least, thanks to all the Spa GAA officers who helped behind the scenes and for all the people who attended to support their Lily. The club is very proud of this event since 1974 and long may it continue.
This game was played in Spa on Thursday evening, and although both sides missed a number of scoring opportunities throughout, it was the home side that won out in the end.
Despite Gavin Kelly kicking the opening score of the game, Spa led from there on. Glenflesk were reduced the 14 men shortly thereafter, and with three more scores from Niall McCarthy, John Falvey and Ciaran Spillane, and two more from Glenflesk's Gavin Kelly, at the break Spa led 0-7 to 0-4.
Glenflesk came back at them in the second half and were soon within a point again after two more Gavin Kelly scores. Niall McCarthy replied with two pointed frees, but again Glenflesk responded with points from Ollie Favier and Alan Murphy to make it 0-9 to 0-8 with ten minutes remaining.

U-12 Co. League Div 1: Phase 2 Round 2 Spa v An Ghaeltacht
U12 Boys A Team
Round 2 of our Division 1 County League took place in the evening sunshine in Spa against a very formidable An Gaeltacht side last Sunday evening.
The game got off to a blistering start with a goal apiece inside the first 5 minutes. Following this, both sides traded points for much of the remainder of the half. There were some fabulous passages of play, defensive skill and attacking guile on display by both sides, but a scoring burst which included two goals just before half time gave our boys an advantage going in at the break leading 3-07 to 2-04.
Having played against the breeze in the first half, An Gaeltacht started the second half strongly aided by a strong breeze blowing up from the town end of the pitch. They scored 2-06 in total in the second half, however our boys defended stoutly and were not found wanting in attack either and kicked 2-03 ourselves against the breeze to record a great win with final score of 5-10 to 4-11.
U12 Boys B Team
On Sunday evening our U12 B team put up a great battle with An Gaeltacht. Playing against a strong breeze in the first half, Spa did very well to go in only 2 points down at half time. In the second half Spa came out fighting and levelled things up with 10 minutes to go. However, An Gaeltacht proved too strong in the end and the game finished 4-04 to 2-06. It was a great performance by Spa considering most of the team is made up from our U10's.
Next up is Rathmore away on Sunday June 2nd at 6pm.
Just ten days after meeting in round one of the Junior County League, Spa and Gneeveguilla met again in the first round of the East Kerry Junior League on Tuesday evening.
Three first half goals for Gneeveguilla was the difference at the end, with both sides evenly matched throughout. After twenty minutes Gneeveguilla had raced into a 3-5 to 0-4 lead, with Liam Spillane (2) and Niall McCarthy (2) on target for Spa and Jack Cremin (1-2), Evan Cronin (1-1), Daniel Gleeson and Shane O'Sullivan (1-1) with the Gneeveguilla scores. Three more from Spa's Andrew Fitzgerald, Keith Myers and Niall McCarthy, and three more from Gneeveguilla's Tony Cronin, Daniel Gleeson and Shane O'Sullivan made it 0-7 to 3-8 at half time.
Niall McCarthy (2) and Pat Cronin (2) points early in the second half were quickly followed by three from Gneeveguilla's Brendan Sheehan, Shane O'Sullivan and Evan Cronin to make it 0-11 to 3-11 going in to the final quarter. Niall McCarthy was fouled in the small square and kicked the resulting penalty and followed with the superb '45 to narrow the gap, but a late point from Gneeveguilla's Evan Cronin and goal from Mike Brosnan finished the game at 1-12 to 4-12.

Spa produced a sparkling performance against a badly depleted home side to take two precious county league points away from a sun-drenched Con Keating Park.
Evan Cronin and Niall O'Mahony had Spa quickly on the scoreboard before Daniel Daly (f) opened the home sides' account. Evan Cronin and David Spillane (f) stretched Spa's lead before Mike O'Donoghue deftly finished a great move to the net. David Spillane made it 1-5 to 0-1 after the first quarter and a completely dominant Spa reeled off scores from Evan Cronin (2), Mike O'Donoghue (3, 2f) and Ryan O'Carroll.
Mike O'Donoghue and Ryan O'Carroll also came very close to scoring goals, O'Donoghue just inches wide and Ocarroll forcing a great save out of Michael Daly. Jack Daly, St. Mary's best player, did burst through for a great goal, and Daniel Daly (f) and Conor O'Shea added points. They were battling against the tide, though, with Spa closing out the half strongly through Ciaran Spillane ('45), Mike McCarthy, and a goal from David Spillane. Half-time Spa 2-12 St. Marys 1-3
Spa completely controlled the third quarter, with Shane Cronin and Mike O'Donoghue pointing before Evan Cronin gathered from David Spillane and slipped it under the keeper. The same player added two more points to put the game well beyond St. Marys' reach.
They never stopped trying, Daniel Daly (3, 2f) and Brian Curran battling all the way to a finish. Cormac Cronin closed our Spa's scoring before Cian Esmonde finished St. Marys' tally.
