Co League Rd 8 Spa v Rathmore

IMG_2979.jpg

Spa 1-13 Rathmore 0-20

Spa travelled to a sunny Rathbeg on Saturday night and, despite some great defensive work from Spa, Rathmore finished well to take the two Co. League points.

Spa had a good start and quickly had four points on the board from David Spillane (2), Ryan O'Carroll and Mike O'Donoghue. Mark Reen opened the scoring for Rathmore and they almost rattled the net early on but James Devane got a great touch and knocked the ball out for a '45. John Moynihan added another for the home side before Mike O'Donoghue netted a brilliant goal for Spa in the 15th minute to make it 1-4 to 0-2.

Mark Reen (2) exchanged points with Ryan O'Carroll and Mike Foley before Rathmore closed in on goal again, this time Anthony Darmody getting a touch and tipping the ball over the crossbar. Mike O'Donoghue added another for Spa before points from Dean Fitzgerald and Mark Reen (2) made it 1-7 to 0-8. Ryan O'Carroll and David Spillane extended the Spa advantage and a final point from George O'Keeffe made it 1-9 to 0-9 at the break, the Spa defence doing excellent work in the opening half.

The second half introduction of Chrissy Spiers and Brian Friel had a big impact on Rathmore's performance. Dan O'Donoghue punched the ball over the bar to increase the Spa lead to four, but Rathmore were level within minutes with Darragh Rahilly (2), Dean Fitzgerald and Brian Friel all on target. Spa did have a shot on goal but Mike O'Donoghue's effort went just inches wide before Darragh Rahilly's goal shot at the other end just moments later also went just wide of the post.

Cormac Cronin edged Spa in front briefly but Dean Fitzgerald quickly replied for Rathmore, and from there Rathmore kicked on, with three points in succession taking the lead for the first time, Chrissy Spiers (2) and Dean Fitzgerald the scorers. Mike Foley brought it back to a two-point game at 1-12 to 0-17 with time almost up but Rathmore finished well, Chrissy Spiers (2) and Mark Reen kicking the final scores of the day and Mike O'Donoghue kicking a final point for Spa. The game finished Spa 1-13 Rathmore 0-20.

Spa now have 10 points and with our Division 1 status secure for 2020, our remaining Co. League games are as follows: Spa v Kerins O'Rahillys (in Spa next Saturday July 20th at 7.30pm); Spa v Austin Stacks (in Connolly Park on July 28th); Spa v Templenoe (in Spa on August 18th)

East Kerry Junior League Division 2 Final

IMG_2200.jpg

Spa 0-14 Dr Crokes 1-10

Played in Rathmore on Tuesday night, Spa and Crokes met again as they competed for the East Kerry Junior League Division 2 title. A point, deep in injury time, from Cian Tobin proved to be the winner on the night.

Michael Casey was first on target for Crokes, and Spa had four attempts wide of the mark before Cian Tobin kicked our opening score. He followed with a second but Michael Casey quickly had another two on the board. The first shot on goal came from Cian Tobin but it rebounded off the post, and less than a minute later the same thing happened for Crokes when Sean Courtney's shot bounced back off the Spa post at the end of the first quarter.

Paul Cahill and Darren Gaffey swapped points before Michael Casey netted the Crokes goal in the 19th minute to make it 0-3 to 1-4. Cian Tobin's next point glanced the inside post, Liam Spillane followed with another and Ryan Kelliher sent a long high ball straight between the posts. A point from Mark Hartnett made it 0-6 to 1-5 at half time.

Paul Cahill, Cian Tobin (2) and Liam Spillane exchanged points with Mark Hartnett, Cian O'Neill and Jack Griffin before Crokes were reduced to 14 men going in to the final quarter. Sean Courtney kicked another for Crokes to extend their lead before Paul Cahill scored twice and levelled the game at 0-12 to 1-9 as full time approached.

As injury time began, Alan Kelly kicked a brilliant '45 to edge Crokes in front, but Conor Stack replied for Spa to level the game on 64 minutes. With a number of delays during the half, the play continued and Spa picked up a breaking ball in the middle and closed in on the Crokes goalmouth. A free was awarded and Cian Tobin kicked the winner in the 66th minute. The game finished Spa 0-14 Crokes 1-10.

Well done to the team and to the management of John O'Donoghue, Billy Morris and James Fitzgerald. East Kerry Board officer Donald O'Sullivan was on hand to present the winning trophy to Spa captain Brian Devane after the game.

Spa 2-6 Kilcummin 1-17

Our juniors played away to Kilcummin last Friday but lost to a stronger team on the night. The team had loads of chances but just couldn’t get the vital scores to snatch a victory against our neighbours. Cian Fahy was very influential in the opening half and registered our first score on the night after twelve minutes. We welcomed home Cian Tobin and he played well on his debut. In fact, we only managed two more points in the first half from Eoghan Cronin and Cian Tobin to Kilcummin’s fourteen.

Second half we played much better and very unlucky not to rattle the net a few more times but just had no luck on the night. Andy Ftizgerald was the target man up front and won valuable possession to set up scores for Cian Tobin and David Carroll. Our young squad tried hard though and no doubt this loss will stand to them in next outing.

Team: Ollie Cremin, John McKenna, Brian Devane (Capt), Paudie O Donoghue, Connie Cremin, Hugh O Donoghue, Thomas Fleming, Shane Fenton, Eoghan Cronin (0-1), David Carroll (1-0), Mikey Moynihan, Conor Kerins, Keith Myers, Andy Fitzgerald (0-1), Cian Fahy (0-1). Subs: Cian Tobin (1-3)

East Kerry Junior League Division 2 semi-final

Spa 2-15 Glenflesk 2-10

Conor Stack and Conor Kerins swapped early scores with Gavin Kelly (2) and John B O'Donoghue before Spa kicked an unanswered 1-5, Mikey Moynihan (2), Andrew Fitzgerald (2) and Conor Stack on target and Gary Vaughan with the first Spa goal.

Darragh Fleming found the net for Glenflesk shortly after and they added points from Steven Corsini and Oran O'Donoghue. Spa had two scores from Connie Cremin and Gary Vaughan before the break to lead 1-9 to 1-5 at half time.

Points from Thomas Fleming and Conor Kerins extended that lead but Glenflesk were soon attacking again and Ollie Cremin pulled off a great save before Darragh Fleming pointed for Glenflesk. Gary Vaughan and Steven Corsini exchanged points to make it 1-12 to 1-7 going in to the final quarter.

Glenflesk were keeping the Spa defence under pressure and after another point from Oran O'Donoghue they had a goal shot that went just inches wide and hit the side netting. Darragh Fleming added another point to make it 1-12 to 1-9 but Spa replied well, Paud O'Donoghue pulling off a great save before Gary Vaughan and Pat Cronin added points for Spa.

Michael Horgan netted the second Spa goal but Glenflesk responded immediately with a high ball from Garry O'Donoghue dropping in to the Spa goal. Another Glenflesk point reduced it to 2-14 to 2-10 before a Conor Kerins point finished the game at 2-15 to 2-10.
