Local Links to GAA, Soccer and The Abolition of Rule 27
During 2014 we had many local links with the winning Kerry senior football team Both James O'Donoghue and Jonathan Lyne's grandfathers the late James O'Donoghue (late of Clash) and Arthur E O'Keeffe both won East Kerry titles with the Lissivigeen team of the I940's. While Rathmores Paul Murphy's grand-uncle the late Mick O'Leary, Knockmanagh was a long serving member the Spa team founded in 1948 after Lissivigeen became defunct. This season the focus has changed to what were once referrd to "Foreign Sports" namely rugby and soccer. During the past week there has been much speculation on whether Aston Villa star Jack Grealish would declare for his native England or for the land of his maternal ancestors Ireland and indeed if Jack decides to visit his Lower Minish connections he will be reminded that a member of that family. The late Matty Courtney was also a useful footballer with both Lissivigeen and Dr Crokes. The death of Tom Woulfe at the age of 97 certainly brought back memoreis of the prolonged campaign which he waged for the abolition of Rule 27 popularly known as The Ban from the statue book of the GAA, a campaign which came to fruition at the 1971 GAA Congress. What may not be widely known is that a local woman Mary Lehane Lissivigeen Cross, worked closely with the former Beale native during her tenure as a Civil Servant in Dublin and as well as being his secretary she was also very much his confident on all matters relating to the GAA. She could well have helped to formulate those many motions debated at various conventions of the Association. So Mary take a bow it is timely that your contribution to the opening of Croke Park to other sports be fully acknowledged.
