St Brendan’s Killarney brought the Hogan Cup All Ireland Schools trophy to Killarney in both 2016 and 2017, with Spa members involved in the team both years.
In April 2016 the team overcame St Pats Maghera of Derry in the final in Croke Park by 2-13 to 2-6, and the Spa members involved that year were David Carroll, Dara Moynihan, Niall McCarthy, Evan Cronin, David Spillane with Shane Cronin and Dr Gary Stack assisting the team management.
In April 2017, the Sem returned to Croke Park and the team, captained by Spa’s Dara Moynihan, defeated St Peter’s College Wexford by 0-18 to 0-10 in the Hogan Cup Final. That year Spa also had the honour of hosting the traditional ‘captain’s night’, welcoming the team and management to the clubhouse on April 2nd 2017. The Spa members with the 2017 team were Dara Moynihan, Niall McCarthy, Ryan Kelliher and Dr Gary Stack.
The school had won the Hogan Cup on two previous occasions before the double of 2016/2017 - in 1969 and again in 1992 (Spa’s John Doyle RIP was with the winning team of 1992).
