Spa V Kilcummin: Super League: First Round. 06/02/15
Spa 2-13: Kilcummin 3 -13 Spa Seniors began their 2015 season with a Super League game against Kilcummin in Spa. It was a very entertaining game with some great scoring by both teams. Craig Hickey got Spa off the mark after one minute with a fine point. Andrew Garnet finished off a good move with another point in the fifth minute followed by an excellent point by Aidan Shepherd from the wing in the sixth minute. However Kilcummin were matching Spa score for score. In the fifteenth minute Noel Duggan banged in a super goal for Kilcummin to give them a three point lead. In the 22nd minute K. Teehan, who was very influential at mid field for Kilcummin, got their second goal. This put Kilcummin six points ahead with 22 minutes gone. Spa, to their credit, did not drop their heads and managed to score two goals before half time. The birthday boy, Craig Hickey scored the first followed by a cracking low shot to the net from corner forward John Falvey. Half way through the first half Donal Murphy had to go off after picking up an injury. He was replaced by Kevin O'Sullivan who was making his first appearance for the seniors. Kevin went on to have a great game at wing back and looked very comfortable at this level. After a free flowing first half Spa were very happy to have reduced the lead to just one point, Spa 2-6, Kilcummin 2-7.With the very first attack of the second half Kilcummin scored a goal and this score was to prove decisive. Craig Hickey certainly had his shooting boots on as he added another 5 points to his tally in the second half. Ryan O'Carroll , who came on at center forward in the second half, also added a point as did Jamie Spillane who replaced Pat Cronin at full forward. Kilcummin were very sharp throughout the second half and never let their three point lead slip. The final score was Spa 2-13, Kilcummin 3-13. Overall it was a very positive performance from Spa with some solid performances from our younger players. Timmy Hussey had a fine game at corner back and Aidan Shepherd also did well at wing forward. Rory O'Riordan put in a very good display at wing forward also. It was disappointing to lose the first match of the season but Kilcummin played really well on the day and punished any mistakes Spa made. It was still a very good team performance with plenty to look forward to in the season ahead. Team: James Devane, Paul Russell, Aidan Cahill (capt), Timmy Hussey, Donal Murphy, Shane Lynch, Mike Finnegan, Andrew Garnett, Matt Moynihan, Rory O'Riordan, Shane Cronin, Aidan Shepherd, Craig Hickey, Pat Cronin, John Falvey, Ryan O'Carroll , Kevin O'Sullivan, Jamie Spillane, Darren O'Connor, Conor Kearney, Cormac Kenneally.
