U12 Boys Co League Phase 2- Rd 1 Spa v Laune Rangers
Round 1 of our Division 1 County League commenced in fine fashion on Sunday with an away win to Laune Rangers.
Points by Fionn Daly, JJ O Donoghue, Jack O Donoghue & Shane Doolan coupled by goal and two points from Luke Doolan & a series of fine points by Joey McCarthy saw Spa lead at half time 1-09 to 0-8 having played with the breeze in the first half.
Laune Rangers scored a goal early in the second half which tested our resolve, however some very solid defensive displays by Daragh Brosnan, Adam Herlihy, Jake Leahy & Maurice Joy with some terrific saves by Caolainn Mitchell helped keep our boys out in front.
Jack O Donoghue stormed through with a goal for ourselves and another two goals one each for Maurice Joy & Shane Doolan gave a comfortable margin in the end but one which was harsh on a very strong performance from Laune Rangers. Final Score Spa 4-15 Laune Rangers 2-11. Next Up is An Ghaeltacht next week at home
Our Second Team on their first night out together put on a super performance trailing Laune Rangers by a point at half time. This team the majority of which are U-10’s played gallantly but just faded away in the second half to a stronger and older Laune Rangers team.
U12 Girls Spa v Annascaul
Spa 2-4 Annascaul 4-10
Played in Spa and no referee showed up for fixture. However, both teams decided to play with their own referee. This was a very evenly matched game for the first half. The visitors scored some brilliant scores in the second half and we just ran out of time to narrow the deficit.
Great team performance with excellent work from Casey Mulrey, Muireann Spillane, Caoimhe O'Neill, Siofra Brosnan and Sarah Griffin.
Phase 2 of the U12 Co League started Sunday May 19th and Spa will have 2 teams competing each week. Played in Spa, this game was won and lost in the final few minutes. Three penalties during the game had a major effect on play, with the lead switching between the sides right up to the final moments.
Dingle had the better start and opened the play with a point from Cathal Bambury, before Lucas O Conaill found the net in the 8th minute to give the visitors an early lead. Evan Cronin responded with two pointed frees but Dingle replied again with scores from Matthew Flaherty (2) and Pól ODúbhain to lead 1-4 to 0-2 after twenty minutes. Eoin Fitzgerald had a great run forward but was brought down in the square for the first penalty of the day, which Evan Cronin converted. Two more points from Evan late in the half put the sides level at the break, Spa 1-4 Dingle 1-4.
Ciaran Spillane and Lucas O Conaill exchanged points early in the second half before Spa took control of the game and kicked 1-3 in just four minutes, points from Evan Cronin, Michael O'Donoghue and Niall O'Mahony and the second Spa goal from David Spillane in the 7th minute. Dingle also almost had a second goal, but their quick effort rolled inches wide, and they followed up with points from Cathal Bambury and Seoirse Durrant. Evan Cronin kicked his sixth point of the day before he finished a third Spa goal to the net, making it 3-9 to 1-7 at the end of the third quarter.
Dingle, however, upped their attack and, after points from Aodhán OConchuir and Matthew Flaherty, Cathal Bambury converted the first Dingle penalty when Matthew Flaherty was fouled in the small square. More points from Bambury and Pól ODubhain and suddenly it was 3-9 to 2-11 with just a minute of normal time remaining.
Spa did regain control momentarily with a Shane Cronin point but after a high ball led to a scramble in the Spa square, Cathal Bambury converted a second Dingle penalty, and the visitors took the lead at 3-10 to 3-11 two minutes in to injury time. Spa were unable to get the equalizer and Pól O Dubhain kicked a final point for Dingle, the game finishing Spa 3-10 Dingle 3-12.
